Mr James ‘Jim’ Farrell (or Farrel), 26, from Aghnacliffe, County Longford, boarded the Titanic at Queenstown as a third class passenger, destination New York City. He was instrumental in getting the sisters Kate and Mary Murphy, Katie Gilnagh (McGowan in the Musical) and Kate Mullen through a barricade and to safety by insisting to crewmen blocking their passage “For God’s sake man, let the girls past to the boats, at least!” The crewman swiftly complied but locked the gate behind the girls. His actions never left the memory of Kate Gilnagh. He died in the disaster, his body was recovered by the MacKay Bennett and he was buried at sea on 24 April 1912.
