Miss Mary Katherine “Katie” Gilnagh (Kate McGowan in the Musical), 16, from Co Longford, Ireland boarded the Titanic at Queenstown as a third class passenger . She shared cabin 161 on E Deck with Katie Mullen, Kate Murphy and Mary Murphy, and she was bound for New York. She was rescued in lifeboat 16. In later life she became a member of the “Titanic Enthusiasts of America” and she appeared on two televison programs, To Tell The Truth and the Steve Allen Show, she was also mentioned in Walter Lord’s, A Night to Remember and her picture appeared in a 1953 Life Magazine account of the tragedy. She married John Joseph Manning and died on March 1, 1971 in Long Island City, New York at the age of 75.
