Miss Katherine “Katie” Mullen , 19, was born on 29 May 1890. She came from Esker, Co Longford and boarded the Titanic at Queenstown as a third class passenge,.destination New York. She shared cabin 161 on E-deck with Kate Gilnagh, Kate Murphy and Mary Murphy. On the night of the sinking she and her roommates were held back at a gate leading to the lifeboats but James Farrell persuaded the crew to let them through the gate and she was rescued in lifeboat 16. She stayed in New York City following the sinking and married Martin Kearns, living in Queens, New York for the rest of her life. She did not mind speaking of the Titanic until the death by drowning of her son during World War 2. After that, Kate Kearns never wanted to discuss the Titanic disaster again. She died 1 November 1970 in Woodside, Queens, New York.
